Which Raw Diet Shrinks Muscles but Can Pile on Pounds?

How To Gain Muscle On A Raw Food Diet

Below I’ll reveal which kind of raw food diet is the worst for building muscle and which raw food diet is the ultimate natural body building diet.

There’s a huge fallacy out there that people new to the raw food lifestyle believe. Because they try going raw and start losing a lot of weight they assume that they’re losing muscle as well. That may be true if you make some raw food diet mistakes and or if you eat the wrong kind of raw food diet.

However, I think they believe they’re losing muscle because the vegan raw food diet is lower in protein than a diet than the typical diet filled with animal foods and dairy. We’re so brainwashed to believe we need tons of protein that it just doesn’t make sense that the Optimal Raw Food Diet is also the ultimate and natural… body building diet.

How much protein do we really need? And is the quality and therefore quantity of the protein on an Optimal Raw Food Diet better than even the Atkins diet?

Well we certainly don’t need more protein than when we double in size as babies in about a year. Human mother’s milk is only about 6% of total calories coming from protein. So why would we need more than 6% protein to build muscles. That’s easily attainable on the 811 Diet.

And certainly the quality of the protein on a raw vegan diet is exceptional because it has not been damaged by cooking. Cooking denatures protein and makes them largely unusable. So we know that protein or more accurately amino acids are not an issue on a raw food diet. Except maybe that our protein is higher quality, more useable and certainly less toxic. So in effect you get more useable protein on a raw food diet that virtually any other diet in existence.

Listen To This Story About The Weakened, Power Lifting Raw Foodist I Know

Let me tell you a story about someone I know. He’s a real nice guy. He’s into power lifting and was so before going 100% raw. His problem was that when he went 100% raw he lost a lot of strength and he lost muscle mass as well.

He continued to work out intensely but nothing he did made much of an improvement in his strength. Each year I saw him he complained about the same thing. He just wasn’t as strong as he used to be on his cooked food diet and quite frankly he had little muscle to show for his efforts.

Little did he realize his fatal flaw.

When I asked him what his diet was I wasn’t surprised to find out that he was afraid of eating fruits. He ate lots of greens and avocados.

He was tricked and brainwashed into eating the Hollywood Raw or High Fat Raw Food Diet. The poor guy was afraid of eating fruits. I think this was actually his downfall and why he couldn’t put on muscle.

It’s so sad to see so many people struggling and failing on a raw food diet because of the pseudo scientific mumbo jumbo that is in the majority of the popular raw food diet books. They follow the anything goes as long as it’s raw mentality. But for many people this is a road to disaster.

What many of these muscle heads don’t realize is that you need enough carbohydrates to build muscle as well. And since the low fat raw diet and the high fat raw diet provide roughly the same amount of protein then we know that protein consumption was not the issue.

You have to have enough energy to fuel your fitness activities and that comes primarily from eating sweet fruit if you follow The 811 Diet or Optimal Raw Food Diet as I call it.

Personally, I have no problem putting on muscle. I never take any protein supplements. I just make sure to eat plenty of fruit and plenty of mineral rich and high protein green leafy vegetables. Spinach is my and Popeye’s favorites.

The more muscle building exercises I do the more muscle I put on. I have more muscle than my cooked food days and even more muscle than any of my pictures on the Internet reveal. I get bigger and better with age.

I would have had bigger muscles on my cooked food diet as well if I trained the way I do these days. So really one of the big keys is you have to exercise in a way that produces muscle. And you have to get enough high quality nutrients including carbohydrates and protein. But if you eat enough calories from whole and raw foods, protein simply isn’t an issue.

Highly Detailed Testimonials

You also might want to read this tremendous testimonial by Lisa Oborne on page 294 of Dr. Douglas N. Graham’s breakthrough book, The 80/10/10 Diet. She’s gone from being unable to exercise at all while on an ultra high fat and no fruit diet to becoming a professional body builder. She completely transformed her life.

Actually, the testimonial in my version of the book is quite old. A number of years ago I found out that Lisa actually started entering professional body building competitions and doing quite well if my memory serves me correctly.

She was also 35% body fat while eating high fat raw. Her strength has increased at least 300% for every body part. And she’s lost a lot of fat. Not to mention that she also healed her asthma which didn’t heal after over a year of high fat raw.

Remember, she wasn’t even capable of exercising on the high fat raw food diet. There are so many detailed testimonials in that book. Many of them are several pages long. People who had candida and just about every major disease. But also so many stories of people having little muscle and loads of fat on their bodies by following the high fat raw food diet.

Shocking Fat Facts

Here’s a shocking fact. If you overeat fatty foods they take very little energy to convert to fat on your body. For each 100 calories of fat consumed 97 of them will be turned into body fat.

Want to know something else shocking? That fat stays in the same form as you ate it. If you ate bacon, the fat gets stored as bacon. If you ate coconut, it stays as coconut, same for avocado or anything. It doesn’t change form when it’s stored in your fat cells.

However, if you somehow manage to eat an excess of carbohydrates only 77 out of those 100 calories would be converted to fat. It simply takes much more energy to convert carbohydrates into fat.

Remember 100 extra calories of fat means 97 extra fat calories on your body. An interesting thing to note is that rural Chinese actually eat about 270 more calories a day than Americans do and yet they stay slim.

It’s quite likely because their diet is only about 15% of calories coming from fat. And they also exercise more but even the office workers in this region are slim.

Another problem with fat consumption is that it does not satisfy appetite. You can’t taste fat and it’s extremely easy to overeat it, especially in the form of oils and dehydrated fatty foods like raw crackers and breads.

So do yourself a favor, if you want to learn how to gain muscle on a raw food diet and lose the fat, why not try the Optimal Raw Food Diet as I teach at HowToGoRaw.com. I’ll help make your transition to eating raw as smooth and easy as possible.

Eating the right raw diet is half of the equation, you also have to do exercises that actually build muscles. While the Lightning Speed Fitness Program is not a purely body building program it will indeed increase your muscle size but you’ll get functionally fit muscles with real world or coordinated strength.

You’re not going to look like a bulky and bloated body builder but you will look strong and you’ll have strength for every day activities and for peak performance in sports of all kinds. And remember one of the reasons it’s called the Lightning Speed Fitness Program is because it can dramatically improve your running speed in days.

Which Raw Diet Shrinks Muscles but Can Pile on Pounds? — 5 Comments

  1. Hey Roger,

You mention that you are much bigger currently then any picture of you shows. This is due to continued muscles building exercises along with the perfect diet. Would you also say to this that you have put on weight with the increased muscularity, or no?
    Thanks.

  2. Roger,
Where would almonds fit into this fat equation and conversion? They are raw, high carbs AND high fat.
How are they converted according to this articles advice and info? I’ve heard raw almonds are very good and not to
be afraid of the fat content in them (in moderation of course altho sometimes it’s hard not to overeat them as they give that needed crunch to a mostly soft type texture of most raw foods) because they are of the ‘good EFA’ type fats.

  3. Hey Roger,
I am interested in putting on 20 pounds of solid muscle in 3 months on a mostly raw food diet. I plan on training using bodyweight exercises. Do you think i can do it? I haven’t seen many other raw foodists put on so much muscle, so it’s hard to tell. Any tips too?
    Thanks a lot,
    Scott

  4. Hey Scott, I took the liberty of responding (maybe Roger will too)

It’s definitely possible! But, you will HAVE to be on a calorie surplus of at least 500 calories. Even though raw food is more nutritious, and your body makes better use of it – putting on muscle means your body needs more energy than usual to maintain the increased tissue. So be prepared to eat a lot of bananas. Also don’t be afraid to go slightly out of the 80-10-10. 70-15-15 won’t kill you, and some extra protein and fat won’t kill you or make you unhealthy. Fat for hormone production and extra protein will only help you build more, and faster. Provided you don’t skimp out on the veggies too, and that you know your stuff about working out (sets, reps, excercices etc – I recommend heavy compund exercices) you should have no problem doing it. Although you will of course have to work for it, stay on your routine and follow your diet strict. Try a raw-vegan protein drink too from sprouted brown rice. Great for recouperation after training along with other goodies you put in it. Remember to keep a training journal to track your progress, it helps a lot when going for a goal.
