What’s Wrong with the Fruit or Fat Paradigm?

There’s a BIG ASSumption in the Low Fat RawVegan (LFRV) Community.

And that assumption is this.

In order to get the bulk of your calories from raw foods you have two choices — either fruit and or fat.

And this is one of the things that makes it so hard for people to go raw and stay raw.

Because this overly limits your food and therefore nutrient choices.

The LFRV model for going raw ASSumes that there are no other viable choices than eating fruit to get raw carbohydrates.

And over the last few years I’ve found this to be a HUGE oversight and flaw in LFRV.

In fact, I regularly eat non fat and non fruit sources for my calories.

They usually have these characteristics:

1. They’re much cheaper than fruit
2. They have a different nutrient profile than fruit
3. They store longer than fruit (sometimes for years)
4. Usually they don’t need to be ripened before eating

So what are some of the GINOURMOUS problems caused by this fruit or fat paradigm?

1. Well for one thing this is largely responsible for the malnourishment of many a raw foodist.

Fruit by itself is a wonderful food but it should not be the main and only basis for building the body. If you eat only fruit, greens and limited quantities of nuts and seeds you may quickly find yourself malnourished. Even if you aren’t at first aware of it.

Over the years I’ve met many a raw foodist who was malnourished but they didn’t even know it.

2. This makes most people who try to go raw with this paradigm end up craving cooked food BIG TIME.

Especially at dinner time.

I mean, wouldn’t you start to go nuts if all your eating all day long is fruit, fruit and more friggin fruit? Eating nothing but sweet mixed in with a few greens can get old really quick.

And for this reason alone going raw is twice as hard as it should be.

By simply adding other sources of raw carbohydrates to your diet you can easily stifle cooked food cravings because your taste bud’s and body’s needs are being met.

For me personally, it’s just so wonderful to be able to eat rich, hearty, FILLING and savory raw carbohydrate sources for dinner. And when I do so I usually don’t even feel the need to eat fatty foods.

I hardly ever make nut pates anymore.

Now I have an alternative recipe that is low in fat and yet tastes better than nut pates. And yes it really fills me up just like cooked food used to do.

I’ve dropped down my fat consumption quite a bit as a result.

Though I still highly recommend people eat nuts and seeds as well. For they have their own unique nutrients that can’t be obtained by eating fruits and greens alone.

So for a balanced and nutritionally complete Raw Food Diet you need at least these 4 food groups. And not necessarily in this order.

1. Fruits
2. Vegetables
3. Fatty foods like nuts, seeds, avocados
4. Savory Raw Carbohydrates – like beans – tubers or root vegetables – grains and squashes

Yes you can very safely eat certain of these foods raw and make stunningly delicious and at the same time nutritious recipes.

We have a whole collection of recipes we’ve been developing for our upcoming Savory Raw Carbs program.

The low fat raw food movement has completely ommited an important food group that our family now eats from just about every day.

It’s no wonder so many people have found it next to impossible to stay raw.

Previous to this the LFRV Diet was incomplete and imbalanced.

There was too much LIMITING of foods and not expanding raw food choices.

A whole LARGE food group was omitted just because a few people didn’t believe you could eat those foods raw or that they weren’t natural foods for humans.

I’ve found out that’s another one of those ill founded “religious-raw-right” ideas that has no basis in reality.

Now in the meantime we don’t quite yet have ready Savory Raw Carbs.

But we do have another program that definitely handles the problem with excessive cooked food cravings at dinnertime.

And it also solves another HUGE problem with the raw food movement. Not eating enough greens. SVS makes it easy to double your intake of greens as you’ll greedily start devouring them every evening.

And that’s our world famous and breakthrough program Savory Veggie Stews.

It’s currently on FIRESALE which means the price will go up automatically at midnight tonight Eastern or New York City time.
